The useful question is not which filter is best. It is which of three organism groups you are trying to stop, because that decides the product and the price. Specifications below come from each manufacturer’s own page, read on July 20, 2026.

How to choose

Start with bacteria, protozoa and viruses, in that order of size. They are three different problems and a filter’s micron rating only answers two of them.

Protozoan cysts, giardia and cryptosporidium among them, are the largest. Every product here stops them, and the published percentages are 99.9999% for Sawyer, 99.999% for LifeStraw parasites and 99.9% for Grayl.

Bacteria, E. coli, salmonella, cholera, are smaller and still comfortably larger than a 0.1 or 0.2 micron pore. All three products publish very high bacteria figures.

Viruses are the group that separates the products. They are small enough to pass through both membranes here. Sawyer publishes no virus claim. LifeStraw publishes no virus claim. Grayl publishes 99.99%, and does it with electroadsorption and activated carbon rather than by having smaller holes. If you take one thing from this page: a filter that advertises a micron rating and nothing about viruses is telling you the truth, and you should believe it.

Then ask what the water has been past. Viruses in drinking water are a sewage problem. Water that has run off a mountainside above any habitation is a bacteria and protozoa problem, and a membrane filter is the correct and much lighter answer. Water from a river below a town, an unlabeled standpipe, or a tap in an unfamiliar building is a different question, and a filter alone does not answer it. We have not verified national water quality data and we are not going to summarize it from memory, so treat the source in front of you as the deciding evidence, not the flag on the map.

Then weigh what it costs to carry. The Sawyer filter element is 3 oz, roughly 85 g. The LifeStraw Peak Collapsible Squeeze 1L is 102 g. The Grayl GeoPress is 450 g. That is not a small penalty on foot and it is irrelevant in a van. Virus protection is heavy because it needs a mechanism that a membrane does not have.

Then read the rated life and the flow rate, and notice the gaps. LifeStraw publishes up to 2,000 liters. Grayl publishes 350 presses, or 250 liters, and 8 seconds for 710 ml, which works out at 5 liters per minute. Sawyer publishes neither figure on its product page. A manufacturer that names a protocol and a rated life is giving you more to check than one that quotes only percentages.

Last, chemicals and taste. Membranes do nothing about dissolved chemicals. Activated carbon does, and only the GeoPress has it. Agricultural runoff, old plumbing and water that tastes of the tank it sat in are carbon problems, not micron problems.

The short version

Upland and rural water on foot, and you want the lightest thing that works: Sawyer Squeeze, 0.1 micron absolute, filter element 3 oz.

The same job with a published 2,000 liter life and a named protocol: LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze 1L, 0.2 micron, 102 g.

Water you do not trust, tap water in unfamiliar places, or travel where sewage contamination is a real possibility: Grayl GeoPress, the only one here with a published virus figure, at 450 g and a 250 liter cartridge.

None of this changes where you may legally camp or draw water. Start with free camping in Europe, and read wild camping, free camping and aires if you are still treating those three as the same thing.
