What it is like to arrive here.

This is an aire de services, not just a parking spot, and by the standards of a free stopover it is unusually well equipped.

An aire is a stopover a French commune sets aside for motorhomes. This one sits beside the pond at Saint-Caradec, a village in the middle of the Cotes-d’Armor, and the departmental tourist board lists it as free and self-service. You are parking somewhere the commune has set aside for it, not somewhere you hope to be left alone.

What is actually here

Toilets, showers, drinking water and a waste dump point that takes both grey water and chemical toilet waste. The tourist board describes the site as 8 spaces beside the water next to a sanitary block, with a picnic shelter, and says the water refill and the drain are free.

There is no electric hook-up, so plan to run on your own batteries.

Showers on a free aire are rare enough to be worth planning around. If you are working out where to spend the night you actually want a wash, this one earns the detour more than most.

Where it sits

Saint-Caradec is inland central Brittany, a few kilometers south of Loudeac, and that is a different country from the coast. This is farmland and wooded river valley, quiet, with the Oust and the Nantes to Brest canal not far away. The coast is roughly an hour north. Nobody comes here for a sea view.

What you get instead is a low-traffic overnight on the way across the peninsula. Central Brittany is the part most people drive through on the way to Finistere or the Golfe du Morbihan, and a free aire with a shower block in the middle of that drive is a practical thing to know about. The site is on the D7 beside the etang, so expect an open, level setting rather than shelter.

The rule that applies

France leaves overnight motorhome parking to the commune. Nothing on this page overrides the mairie. Before you rely on this

Check the tourist board listing linked below before you commit to a long detour. Communal aires get closed for works, restricted after problems, or handed to a concession that starts charging, and none of that reaches a database quickly.
